Is Stress manufacture You Fat? Exploring The Link between Stress and Weight Gain

Brain Cancer Statistics :

Recent Eu statistics published in the Eurostat Yearbook narrate that Britons are the second fattest nation in Europe and the second fattest in the advanced world, trailing only behind the Usa. 22% of Uk men and 23% of Uk women are now classified as obese and studies have shown that the rate of child obesity has trebled in the last 20 years, with 10% of 6 year olds and 17 % of 15 year olds now obese.

There is growing concern that the health issues associated with obesity - heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and cancer will come to be more prevalent. Obese individuals have a 59 - 100% increased risk of early death compared to those of normal weight, and the risks growth substantially when a someone is more than 30 lbs (approximately 14 kg) overweight.

Brain Cancer Statistics

An increasing amount of studies have shown that Stress is a major factor in weight gain and obesity, and that the serious health issues associated with severe persisting stress are same to those associated with obesity.

Scientific Studies Linking Stress to Weight Gain

Research at the University College London reported that a study of 10,000 civil servants found a link in the middle of work stress and metabolic syndrome, a health where elevated levels of cortisol can cause insulin resistance and weight gain. The excess issue of cortisol caused by persisting stress gives the body the message to store fat in the abdomen. The study showed that the more stress someone suffered, the more likely they were to invent the syndrome.

Studies conducted at the University of Leeds investigated the relationship in the middle of stress and eating behaviour and found that stress disrupts people's normal eating habits. The stress was caused my minor work and non-work events, such as having an consulation with a colleague or friend, losing keys, missing a deadline or having to give a presentation. Stress causes people to opt for unhealthy high fat and high sugar snacks in preference to healthier food choices. They also eat less than usual at their main meals, but consume significantly more in the middle of meal snacks. This was accompanied by a allowance in the consumption of vegetables. The study also found that mental stress was more likely to cause people to eat than corporeal stress and that emotional eaters tend to turn to food to avoid dealing with negative feelings. Women are more prone to 'stress eating' than men.

A similar study is currently being conducted on over 4,000 London school children. The explore conducted by University College London has found that children who were more stressed had a higher food intake and were more into snacking, especially foods with a high fat content, whilst their fruit and vegetable intake reduced.

A study conducted by scientists from the University of Tromso in Norway found that 'night eating syndrome' was associated to stress and raised cortisol levels. The women with the syndrome ate at least half of their daily food intake after 8 p.m. And snacked at least once while the night.

Why Does Stress Cause Weight Gain?

Whenever we are stressed the brain abruptly sets up a chain of events that turns our body chemistry upside down. This is a primitive response known as the 'fight or flight' response and it is there to safe us in perilous situations; it helps us cope with engaging circumstances by placing us in the most advantageous corporeal health to deal with them. In the advanced world we rarely need this defence to safe us from strike by wild animals etc. And today the main source of stress comes from every day events. The 'fight or flight' response is triggered whenever we are challenged by almost whatever that happens to us, from getting out of bed in the morning, driving the car, dealing with a difficult situation at work or coping with an unexpected traumatic event.

Stress triggers an adrenaline rush throughout the bloodstream. The mind becomes alert, the bronchial tubes open for deeper breathing. The heart beats faster and contracts more strongly. Blood pressure rises and sugar pours into the principles for more energy. The digestive principles shuts down and the skin turns pale as blood is directed to the vital organs and muscles. The eyes dilate so that we can see more clearly. Most of the stress we perceive on a daily basis does not involve corporeal effort which burns calories; any way we still perceive the need to 'do something'. For many people 'doing something' is eating, even when they are not hungry. It helps to make us feel better, immediately reducing the level of stress, and this becomes a habit or learned response to stress.

The action of adrenaline is balanced by the issue of cortisol which triggers the feeling of hunger following the stress response, and for primitive man this was considerable for replenishing nutritional shop following corporeal exertion. We may perceive the same hunger without having moved a muscle! Cortisol also readies the immune principles to deal with any threat such as injury or germs and keeps the immune principles in check, as it prevents inflammation from spreading throughout the body where there is a local infection.

Experiencing stress usually throughout the day means that adrenalin is continually released into the blood, with the result that blood sugar levels remain elevated. To counteract this we issue insulin to carry the sugar into the cells for energy. Too much insulin damages the cells development them unyielding to it and too much sugar remains in the blood which is then converted to fat, increasing harmful cholesterol levels, raising blood pressure and encouraging the storehouse of fat, especially in the abdomen. The result is heart disease, strokes and weight gain. Continually raised insulin levels can generate cravings for sugar and other refined carbohydrates, as well as suppressing the immune system, which makes us vulnerable to colds, viruses, infections or even cancer.

Chronic stress has been associated with low levels of foremost hormones and can result in a variety of symptoms together with increased appetite, insomnia, depression, anxiety, migraines, Pms, obsessive/compulsive behaviour, obesity and addiction, as well as feelings of exhaustion, fatigue, lethargy and that life is generally devoid of pleasure. Scientists continue to observe hormones that play an foremost role in weight regulation and how imbalances conduce to weight gain.

Experiencing stress on a daily basis can come to be chronic, initially producing minor symptoms that vary from someone to person. The most base ones are listed below:

  • Sleep disturbance
  • Feeling lethargic
  • Headaches
  • Feelings of depression
  • Indigestion
  • Anxiety
  • Muscle tension
  • Mood swings
  • Skin problems
  • Poor concentration
  • Abnormal heartbeat
  • Poor memory
  • Irritable bowel/diarrhea
  • Low self esteem
  • Changes in eating patterns
  • Food cravings
  • Weight gain
  • Feeling run down or susceptible to colds, viruses and other infections
  • Odd aches and pains, particularly in the chest, shoulders, neck, and back.

How many of these symptoms have you experienced recently?

Prolonged or persisting stress results in exhaustion of the adrenal glands and places great strain on other organs in the body. The risk of serious disease (angina, asthma, auto-immune diseases, cancer, cardio-vascular diseases, diabetes, depression, hypertension, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis etc.) also greatly increases and will tend to gift itself first in organs that are inherently weak.

When you feel physically exhausted as a result of persisting stress, you may feel too tired to prepare salutary meals, and exercise is the last thing you want to do. Sitting watching the television eating a takeaway meal or a ready prepared microwaved meal is much more appealing, and we all know that a sedentary lifestyle causes weight gain.

Dieting and Stress

We have established that stress causes weight gain. You are stressed and overweight, which makes you even more stressed, so what do you do? You embark on a weight loss diet - again!

Let us now think the scientific studies that have examined the link in the middle of dieting and stress.

A study conducted on one hundred and sixteen undergraduate Ucla women asked them to fill out a questionnaire to correlate the result of dieting and persisting stress. Results showed that knowing either a someone was dieting at one point was a reliable predictor of either the someone would realize persisting stress nine weeks later. The implication is that dieting is a persisting stressor.

Other explore has in case, granted good understanding into the consequences of food restriction. An experiment was conducted on young salutary males without a history of weight problems. The men ate usually for the first three months while their eating patterns and personalities were studied. For the next three months they were put on correct diets where their normal food intake was halved and for the final three months they were re-introduced to eating normal amounts of food. The results had far reaching effects. Food became the main topic of conversation, reading and daydreaming for nearly all of the men. Menus fascinated those who had no old interest in food and cooking and a large ration expressed an interest in taking up cooking as a vocation half-way straight through the duration of food restriction. Many of the men found it impossible to stick to the diet, suffering feelings of guilt because they ate privately on impulse. They reported feeling anxious and depressed and had trouble concentrating. They became withdrawn and less sociable. Two men suffered emotional breakdowns and one even cut off the end of his finger in the hope that this would allow him to leave the study! The experiment showed that dieting also changes body image. Men who were previously unconcerned about their weight and appearance started to complain about feeling overweight and became considerable of their body shape and size even though they had in effect lost weight.

During the final three month duration of normal eating their personalities reverted to normal but many continued to have problems with eating. They could not stop eating when they felt full and generally ate more than they wanted. The preoccupation with food continued with some reporting a worsening of cravings, particularly for sweets, nuts and dairy products. Snacking in the middle of meals became common, even for those who did not 'snack' before the experiment. After four weeks 2/3s of the men who remained in perceive with the researchers became so implicated about their weight that they put themselves on an additional one diet. For eight months following the diet, food continued to be a major concern for more than 60% of the men.

In an additional one study a group of dieters and a group of non-dieters were invited to eat as much ice cream as they liked after being given three different 'pre-loads' - one glass of milk shake, two milk shakes or nothing at all. The non-dieters ate less ice cream after one milk shake and even less ice cream after two. The dieters ate most ice cream after drinking two milk shakes. The study showed that the milkshake undermined the dieter's willpower. Once they had broken their diets they felt themselves to be failures and made the most of the situation. They took the view that they could eat as much as they liked and would resume their diets again the next day.

These findings show that dieting induces a convert in our relationship with food and it distorts body image. It may contain powerful urges to eat, cravings, excessive preoccupation with food and a normal feeling of being out of control around food. Dieting is very stressful as a result of the internal disagreement it induces and we stop listening to our internal cues of hunger and appetite. It is hardly surprising that serious eating disorders are often preceded with a history of dieting and that dieting itself contributes to the cause of obesity.

So the evidence all points to the closing that stress causes weight gain, which causes more stress, and then dieting to lose the excess weight stresses you even further. It's a vicious circle!

This is why it is so difficult to lose weight and keep it off for any length of time.

The dieting commerce is full of unfounded optimism despite poor success rates. It has been estimated that less than 5% of those who lose weight in effect keep it off for more than one year, and only one in twenty people who join weight-loss programmes reaches their target weight. Half of all dieters end up heavier than before the diet.

Attending a slimming club can help to sacrifice the stress of dieting by providing a support structure; any way the weight loss diets they promote creates immense stress, which is why people return time and time again to try to lose the weight they have regained. Slimming Clubs are plainly not adequate to give master advice on how to administrate stress, combat cravings, emotional eating, low self esteem and poor self image, and unfortunately they merely touch the surface of these underlying issues.

If you are overweight or implicated about weight gain, there is a weight administration programme which adopts a very different arrival with the aim of breaking the stress - weight gain - stress - dieting 'vicious circle' by teaching you how to minimise stress in every area of your life, and how to administrate your weight without dieting or using meal replacements.

The focus of the programme is to improve awareness of physical, mental and emotional issues that generate stress and cause weight gain, and it is very different to any slimming club or weight administration programme that you may have tried in the past!

Aspartame - What it Is, Where You Find it and either It's Safe to Consume

Brain Cancer Statistics :

Summary

Aspartame is an artificial sweetener with negligible fat used widely to sweeten food or drink marketed as low calorie or sugar free. Studies have connected aspartame to a whole of condition problems, but none have been compelling adequate persuade regulators to restrict its use and it remains a legal additive in the Us, Europe and probably worldwide.

Alternative Names

Brain Cancer Statistics :Aspartame - What it Is, Where You Find it and either It's Safe to Consume

Tropicana Slim, Equal, NutraSweet, Canderel, E951

Chemistry and Origins

It was stumbled upon in 1965 by James Schlatter, a chemist working for a pharmaceutical company, who created it while researching drugs to treat ulcers. When he licked his finger, which had accidentally come into touch with aspartame, he noticed the sweet taste.

Aspartame is a dipeptide, which means it is a molecule made up of two amino acids joined by a particular peptide bond. The two amino acids are aspartic acid and phenylalanine. In fact strictly speaking, it is a methyl ester of the dipepetide of these two amino acids and as such has the full name aspartyl-phenylalanine-1-methyl ester.

Classification

Aspartame is a non-saccharide sweetener - this means non-carbohydrate and differentiates it from other sweeteners like sucrose and glucose. It is also classified as artificial and non-nutritive. Regulation in the middle of 1980 and 1996 applications to the Fda for aspartame's use in food and drink in the Us were variously turned down, re-stated and eventually granted for all food and drink amid questions about the validity of study data and its availability to a board of enquiry set up to reconsider its safety. Meanwhile, a whole of European countries popular ,favorite it in the 1980s, and in 1994 it was granted Eu-wide approval. Where it Can be Found Aspartame is not found naturally, but is added as an ingredient to thousands of foods and drinks, as well as being marketed as a sweetener under a whole of trade names. It is also used to sweeten chewing gum and pharmaceutical products like cough syrup. It is apparently also used like sugar as a condiment in some countries. Typically it used as a way to sweeten foods that are marketed as being sugar free, low calorie or good for citizen who need to watch their blood sugar levels. Taste, fat and Digestion Aspartame is roughly 200 times sweeter than sucrose and is fully digested by the body. It has roughly 4 fat per gram but because so itsybitsy of it is needed to generate a sweet taste it can be regarded as having negligible calories.

Although it has a sweet taste, Aspartame is often blended with other sweeteners such as acesulfame K since these combinations are seen as creating a more authentic sugar substitute.

Health Implications and Safety

Few food ingredients have undergone the scrutiny aspartame has been subjected to. It has been studied for decades and controversy continues to rage over its safety.

Theories about the Effects of its By-Products

Aspartame is broken down into a whole of substances when digested - these are methanol, formaldehyde, formic acid, phenylalanine and aspartic acid. In addition, a substance called aspartylphenylalanine diketopiperazine is created when aspartame breaks over time in carbonated drinks, so this joins the list of substances to consider.

There is some concern colse to all these chemicals. For example - methanol from aspartame digestion is believed by some scientists to be safe because it is not harmful in small amounts and is in any case already part of the human metabolism process and can be found simply in fruit juices. On the other hand, other scientists believe we are protected from the simply occurring methanol by other substances in fruit juice not found in aspartame and that persisting poisoning from aspartame is possible.

However, this and theories colse to the dangers of the other substances listed are largely theoretical and although there is study to sustain some of them, nothing concrete has emerged.

The particular issue about which there appears to be universal business agreement is the dangers of phenylalanine to a small whole of people. It is carefully unsafe for those born with phenylketonuria, a rare genetic condition. Sufferers are not able to metabolise phenylalanine and its accumulation can lead to problems with brain development. Phenylketonuria affects only one out of some thousand people, but this whole which varies significantly in the middle of countries - Finland, for example, appears to have a very low incidence of colse to 1 in 100,000.

Reported Symptoms

In 1995 a Us department of Health and Human Services document was submitted to the Fda listing 92 separate symptoms it had received reports about from consumers. Whilst this anecdotal evidence will be regarded largely meaningless from a scientific perspective, it nevertheless gives an idea of the range of problems aspartame consumption may cause.

Evidence of Harm

Scientific studies have tended to focus on the long term effects of consumption, in particular looking at the possibility of an increased risk of cancer. These have been both epidemiological studies of humans and controlled studies with rats.

Some of the studies have been claimed to prove a link, others have been claimed to show no link. In most cases, there have been methodological concerns or suggestions of inherent conflicts of interest that have made impossible any definitive closing about the security or otherwise of aspartame.

For example, a 2005 study that fed aspartame to rats for seven years (conducted by the European Ramazzini Foundation for cancer study in Italy) found a statistically indispensable growth of malignant tumors of peripheral nerves in male rats and of lymphomas-leukemias and malignant tumors of the kidneys in female rats. There were 1800 rats complicated in the study. The European Food security Authority questioned the validity of the results, as did the American Food & Drug Administration. The Foundation issued a rebuttal. Later, questions about conflicts of interest for the Efsa menagerial Director were raised. The Erf did other study in 2007 which they said confirmed their original results. So far, a New Zealand condition authority cast doubt on the results.

For anyone reason, the study to date has not convinced regulatory bodies in any place in the world to restrict the use of aspartame beyond recommendations about daily intake.

Adi (Acceptable Daily Intake)

America's Fda has set the Adi for aspartame at 50 mg/kg of body weight/day. In contrast, the European Commission's Scientific Committee on Food (Scf) has set it at 40. It is not clear how this is calculated, but it is described as a conservative estimate, based on the idea that this whole can be consumed daily over a person's lifetime. As a guide, an adult would need to consume 20 aspartame-sweetened 12oz carbonated soft drinks to reach their Adi.

Other Information

Aspartame does not promote tooth decay and its digestion does not significantly influence blood sugar levels.

My Opinion

There may be insufficient evidence to get aspartame banned, but it's hard to feel good about interesting it with this much controversy about its inherent effects. Just reading how it breaks down in the body is adequate to raise alarm bells. Sure, you could report the digestion of any food in chemical-sounding terms - but the distinction here is that aspartame does not occur in nature so it feels like the chances are low that our bodies are totally happy with the types and proportions of the chemicals aspartame introduces.

As for the Adi, it seems paradoxical that regulators can, amid a deluge of reported symptoms and disputed evidence, report aspartame as safe, yet so nothing else but prescribe limits for its consumption.

If I had to consume food that had been sweetened and if I had to avoid higher-calorie sweeteners, I would be inclined to seek substances that are less removed from nature and not connected with so many condition issues.

That said, I believe we should practice caution about all sweeteners, particularly those recently introduced or discovered. Aspartame is in some ways the grandfather of sweeteners and we should not rule out the possibility that many of the newer sweeteners we are hearing about will in decades to come attract as much controversy once there has been adequate time for them to be fully studied.

What Is the Most leading Thing You Can Do for Your Health?

Brain Cancer Statistics :

Did you know that rehearsal Is the most useful thing you can do for your health. The other night I was up late watching late night cable Tv. A program hosted 8 curative doctors speaking on assorted areas of health.

All had a opportunity to speak on areas of their expertise. One talked about vitamins, someone else explained the virtues of drinking enough pure filtered water, raw food condition was another's topic, someone else spoke on the benefits of yoga, adolescent skin was another's topic.

Brain Cancer Statistics

Ever the condition student, I listened considered to each one. So much facts was being put out there, it was difficult to know where to begin.

Brain Cancer Statistics :What Is the Most leading Thing You Can Do for Your Health?

The host reflected my sentiment.

At the end of the program he said "Ok. A lot of facts has been disseminated here. Out of all this facts what one thing would benefit me the most? " It was quiet for about 30 seconds.

Then individually, one-by-one each doctor spoke. Their answer was unanimous.

Exercise!

There are 13 unique benefits related with regular exercise.

-----Benefits to exercise----------

Cardiovascular disease-Is the foremost cause of death for Americans. The American College of Sports medicine (Acsm) reported in a 2006 study that higher cardiovascular fitness levels promote as much as a 50% discount in cardiovascular risk. Blood vessels dilate and promote circulation throughout the body strengthening the heart, muscles and lungs.

Diabetes-170 million habitancy worldwide now suffer from diabetes. Corporeal inactivity and weight gain weakens the body's quality to furnish insulin.

When insulin levels decline, glucose (blood sugar) levels rise producing the need for more insulin. This is called insulin intolerance.

Regular aerobic rehearsal increases insulin and lowers sugar levels maintaining a balance in the middle of the two. Type 2 diabetes is 90% preventable.

Hypertension-Elevated blood pressure above 140/90 mmg Hg is a major risk factor for heart disease. A up-to-date clinical trial of 54 hypertensive individuals showed a showed a 3.84 (systolic) and a 2.58 (diastolic) decrease of blood pressure when rehearsal was added to their programs.

Exercise is a major factor protecting against hypertension especially as we age.

Triglycerides-It has been well established that elevated triglycerides and cholesterol have been related with a passive and inactive lifestyle.

Studies have shown routine aerobic rehearsal lowers triglycerides and Ldl (the bad cholesterol) while improving Hdl (the good cholesterol).

Stroke-Individuals who engage in moderate to intense rehearsal have lower incidences of stroke. Statistic show a 20% lower risk of stroke with moderate rehearsal and a 27% decrease with intense exercise.

Osteoporosis-Regular Corporeal rehearsal benefits and stimulates bone growth. Activities like walking, running, bicycling, squats, and lunges overload the bones.

This troops the bones to adapt and pronounce strong density.

Cancer-Exercise has been directly correlated to lower incidences in breast, mylenoma, and lung cancers. up-to-date studies have revealed the following among those who rehearsal slowly to intensely:

-30% to 40% discount in colon cancer
-20% to 40% discount in breast cancer
-Improved quality of life for mylenoma cancer victims
-Muscle mass-Muscle mass and compel are indispensable qualities to pronounce as we age. Studies show a muscle loss rate of 1% to 2% per year after age 50.

A loss of muscle mass directly correlates to loss of independence. This contributes to falls, bone fractures, and admission into nursing homes. Less muscle mass also contributes to a slower metabolism and less oxygen consumption.

Brain-Those who rehearsal ordinarily cut the odds of losing their mental cognitive abilities. rehearsal benefits learning, qoute solving and memory.

A study was performed in Paris on 2809 women at risk for cardiovascular disease. The researchers found that women who the were most physically active had the least cognitive decline.

Additionally the women who began taking 30 minuscule brisk walks daily showed the bottom risk of cognitive decline.

Weight control-Overweight habitancy have twice the condition problems than habitancy of normal weight. A up-to-date Rand study considered that obesity is worse than heavy drinking or smoking for your health.

Being overweight opens the doors to 35 dissimilar diseases. regular rehearsal is a major factor in keeping weight under control.

Moods-Do you like feeling euphoric with a sense of well being? rehearsal is the key. rehearsal stimulates the brain chemicals seratonin and norepinephrine, the feel good neurotransmitters.

Molecular biologists and neurologists now stop that rehearsal activates brain chemicals the same way antidepressants do.

A psychologist in Dallas named Jasper Smits is now pioneering a drug free program to treat depression, anxiety, and mood disorders. He understands rehearsal benefits and drugs damage due to side effects. Antidepressant drugs now cost Americans billion dollars annually.

Stress-Mounting evidence suggests that those who are physically fit are far more able to cope stress successfully. Studies performed considered that those who slowly rehearsal at least 3 times weekly cope stress better.

Oxygenation + Detoxification-Exercise promotes blood vessel dilation and blood oxygenation. When oxygen rich blood reaches the muscle, it exchanges the oxygen for carbon dioxide and body toxins.

By blood circulation these toxins are released mainly straight through the lungs and the lymphatic system. Oxygen in the cells prohibits diseases like cancer to exist. Cancer requires an acidic, fermented, non-oxygenated environment to thrive.

This shape obviously shows the power of nicotine, a chemical substance which is the root cause of all your worries. Until and unless you form a formidable opposition against nicotine addiction there is no leave from smoking. Just ponder on his conception for a while. Spring Cleaning - Detox Your Body

Brain Cancer Statistics :

The very first signs of spring are upon us here in Colorado. The crocuses are coming up in my front yard, the green shoots are just appearing on my bushes and trees and Daylight Savings Time is only twelve days away--hello 7:00 o'clock sunsets! Oh, and I am eyeballing the closets in my house, getting ready for the total Spring Cleaning. With my mind already on cleaning, I read a statistic in an article by Mark Haymand M.D. That no ifs ands or buts hit home for me- he writes, "A up-to-date study of umbilical cord blood found 287 toxic chemicals, 217 of which are toxic to the brain and nervous system. And that is what infants are exposed to even before they take their first breath. These toxins contain mercury, lead, Pcbs, Bpa, phthalates, plasticizers, flame retardants and more." This reminded me that Spring is a great time to clean, not only our houses, but the homes that are our bodies, allowing us to lead healthier and lengthier lives and pass on that clarity N ัดเจน to our children.

Some great ways of cleansing your body of toxins this year:

Brain Cancer Statistics

Eat Organic: It might be a bit more expensive, but committing to eating only foods that haven't been sprayed with pesticides is an immediate way to cut your exposure to toxins. On average those of us who eat conventional fruits and vegetables consume over a gallon of neurotoxins per year due to pesticide use. Some fruits and veggies are worse than others-one conventionally grown strawberry exceeds the Fda limit of pesticides for an adult person for the whole year while cantalope and watermelon are less toxic. Another great benefit of organic produce (especially if locally grown)-its packed full of more nutrients than its chemically showered alternative.

Brain Cancer Statistics :Spring Cleaning - Detox Your Body

Know your Fish: Mercury poisoning is a serious issue. Roughly fifteen percent of adult American women have toxic levels of mercury in their bodies. We all know that fish is a salutary alternative to red meat, but staying away from highly toxic big fish such as swordfish and albacore tuna and sticking with wild caught salmon or sardines can no ifs ands or buts make a difference. A good rule of thumb-the bigger the fish, the more mercury-as mercury accumulates in fatty tissue and all those big fish have eaten littler fish that have eaten minute fish...etc.

Good Liver Herbs: The liver is the organ that processes the toxins in your body. Because of the billions of chemicals, additives, and pollutants it deals with every singular day, our livers are chronically overworked. The problem with this is that it can let these toxic chemicals, along with excess sugars and hormones out into the bloodstream and body-causing and/or contributing to Pms, skin rashes, fatigue, obesity and cancer. Treating your liver well lets it due its job. Some great herbs to help detoxify the liver are: milk thistle, burdock, nettle, and dandelion. Try them as tinctures, teas, or capsules. Nettles are also great for your skin and hair and contain a ton of iron, while roasted dandelion root makes a astounding coffee substitute.

Add Cilantro to your Diet: I know, I know, cilantro is one of those love it/hate it herbs but for those of you who love it, cilantro is one of the only food sources that effectively remove heavy metals from the body in a short amount of time. Added to salsa, soup, or made into a great pesto, it can bind with the heavy metals-such as mercury, aluminum, and lead, in our body and allow them to be excreted in as minute as two weeks.

You are What you Eat: One of the best ways of detoxing your body is to eat well. Good detoxing foods include-lemons, green tea, watercress, dandelion greens, cilantro, artichokes, garlic, citrus peels, pomegranate, and even cocoa; and cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, kale, collards, broccoli rabe, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, Chinese cabbage, Chinese broccoli) and to avoid toxic foods such as high fructose corn syrup, synthetic sweeteners, tobacco, and alcohol. Cutting back even a minute bit can make a huge discrepancy in your body's potential to cope toxins. Sticking to whole foods and cutting out processed foods can also no ifs ands or buts help-most processed foods are full of additives and the plastic and tin cans that most food comes in can leach dioxin and aluminum into your body as well as creating psuedoestrogens in women which mimic the hormone estrogen, creating hormonal imbalances that can perhaps lead to cancer.

Detoxifying your body is a astounding gift to give yourself this Spring. Just remember that detoxing can be an intense experience or an uplifting one depending on your sensitivity and the amount of toxins in your body-side effects can contain muscle aches and pains, sadness, anger, depression, flu-like symptoms such as upset stomach, ill or nausea, and dizziness. Remember that these symptoms will pass and leave you feeling stronger, energized and healthier. Take your time, ease into detoxing-taking away and adding foods and herbs gradually (one big convert a week is a good start) and treat yourself extra special while you are doing such a astounding service-get a massage, take an extra-long warm bath, get extra sleep if you can and look transmit to a healthier and happier you!

Depression - The Silent Killer

Brain Cancer Statistics :

I'd like to dedicate this narrative to the short life of Kelty Patrick Dennehy.

The impulse to write about my own past contact of depression and suicidal tendencies has been percolating to the surface of my mind for while now. It's a subject matter that goes largely unnoticed and unspoken for most, until person is directly or indirectly affected by it. I use depression and suicide in the same context because more often or not they tragically go hand in hand, more than we will ever understand or know, from a statistical sense, and in my own contact there was a seamless parallel in the middle of the two very confident elements.

When I think of Kelty's story, or read or hear of a story associated to depression or suicide, there is an instant rapport that identifies me with my own past suffering and the suffering of the individual I am reading or hearing about.

Brain Cancer Statistics :Depression - The Silent Killer

For the first few decades of my life I was haunted by depression and a desire to die. Whenever things got tough for me emotionally or mentally especially in early adulthood, I would always be internally dead ended with an spectacular, feeling of depression and suicidal thoughts. My first cognition around the feelings of helplessness and hopelessness were recognized early on in my life as early as 9 or 10 years old. The feelings of the desire to die, progressively industrialized too surface around the age of 19 years.

While my early childhood would seem by most to be absent of any direct trauma or abuse, I now know the power the mind has to internalize un-integrated emotions and understanding forms back onto itself in unhealthy ways. The absence of any resilience enhancing skill in my life for the first few decades, plainly allowed the energy of "e"motion to be redirected into a feeling and reliance that one of the easiest ways for me to "fix things" was to plainly check out.

While I was never clinically assessed as depressed, the memory and details of my own particular narrative combined with my later exploration into the foray of personal increase and Spirituality now provides me with adequate reference material and insight, to lead me to have a confident level of understanding around my own personal process and story around depression and suicidal thoughts. As early as 6 years old I industrialized an awareness and confusion around my sexuality even though I did not begin my own exploration for someone else 16 years, when I began to express myself sexually as gay man. Also, as a child, I was bullied intensely in the middle of the ages of 7 to 14...

In the context of my own contact of depression and what I have learned to date, I would say these two contributing and interdependent factors became the foundation from which the symptoms of depression and suicidal thoughts were kindled. In spite of a tangible decrease in the bullying factor at around grade 9, or 15years old, the "damage" had already been done. I no longer needed the outer bully, because I had internalized the "language" of the bully within and back onto myself and the person I imagined myself to be. Even now while subtle, the confusion, judgment and lack of acceptance around my sexual identity and childhood contact of bullying continues to be expressed and experienced as a ripple affect, taking the form of self depreciating, thoughts, feelings, emotions, perceptions, associations and memories that have a life of their own.

I furnish some detail colour to this photograph only as a way to frame this narrative. In my heart and my gift day process, I have realized many of these details as now obsolete; they have come to be redundant as I have learned skills of emotional resolution, Self love and have learned to redirect my attention not into the pain and suffering of my past but more importantly the rediscovery of Who I Am. That being said and gratefully received, I also clearly identify the ongoing suffering that continues to express itself in the lives of others who have or are dealing with the stigma and disease of this silent life killer.

The worst lesson of my story peaked around in the middle of 23 and 27 years, where I would go to bed at night and wake up in the morning with the same negative thoughts, feelings, emotions, perceptions, associations and memories that only enhanced and perpetuated my contact of helplessness and hopelessness. At this time, an ongoing lesson of unrequited love and a mom who was dying of cancer pushed me deeply into a quagmire of irreconcilable emotions preventing me from experiencing any real joy and attractiveness that life could provide.

There was only ever one, very lame and "failed" exertion in my history to take action on my desire to check out; where a casual cocktail mix of alcohol and sleep aids was used too prematurely sway the finger of Gods timetable on my life. The absence of "real courage" prevented me from added attempts at exploring more successful methods of escaping the melodrama that my story had become. Instead, I masked those thoughts and feelings; I pursued life relentlessly in an exertion to use an internal zest to combat the dragon's fire within me. On the surface I appeared to live a general life, while on the inside I wallowed in the endless suffering and apathy of my shadow side.

I am not a suited devotee in the area of depression or suicide; I am a self proclaimed graduate of "e"motion high. I earned my Masters and P.H.D., in the field of depression in the school of my life. In spite of the fact I spent the first 28 years of my life infecting myself with high dosages of self engendered curriculum that enhanced and elevated my contact of depression, I was fortunate adequate too categorically "make it through", largely in part too an inner motivation and hunger that eventually spring boarded me not into a premature departure, but instead, the world of personal increase and Spirituality at the age of 27.

My heart is both easy and grievous in the light of knowing the subjective relaxation I have now gained from my own story and the contact of ongoing depression that robed me of a simple, idealistic childhood and youth. The equanimity and understanding I have found within the dearth of my own emotional spectrum while now providing relieve and solace, is often gradually disturbed, when I bump into the suffering that continues to ripple through the pages of others, whose stories of depression and its tyranny unfold with similarity and separate outcomes to my own...

Physiological symptoms may vary from mild to severe and include: headaches, heart palpitations, chest and body aches.

The Yoga/Science Story

The path to subjective relaxation lies in our potential to know, understand and Self navigate all levels of our existence. When we fixate on one size of our existence only, using force or coercion we can only expect more sever ramifications to effect from this indiscretion.

We were born to scrutinize Who We Are! Life is the playground from which we can gain the valuable skills, talents and powers to leverage and engage the field of infinite possibilities with awareness, skillful ease and finesse. These abilities are for the most part, learned skills. Ones proclivity to depression either that be genetic or environmental in circumstance, requires successful intervention on all levels of our existence for integration (healing) to occur. The mind must be attended to. The emotions must be embraced and the body must be cared for.

I am grateful for the fact that I was able to continue to elevate the journey of my own life to greater levels of fulfillment and meaning. I have known more than one who has not. When life has no meaning and we have lost touch with the momentum of inspiration that fulfillment in life offers, we are individually challenged to pick up the invitation to reignite its verve. This entry could not maybe declare the many thousands of influences, models, theories or perspectives that furnish understanding and depth to the story of depression, so I shall focus only on one; stress.

According to yoga, the body/mind is not just a field of substance or matter. At its subtlest level it is a coherent field of energy and facts that is associated effortlessly to a Universe of energy and information. From a field of undifferentiated consciousness, life manifests itself as the world of form and phenomena, nurtured by this field of energy and information.

Our body/mind is the instrument from which we can navigate, scrutinize and join together to this vast Universe; the known and unknown, while cultivating and elevating the gift of our awareness. When we contact health, the energy and facts flows seamlessly through this infinite web of creation allowing us to navigate life with finesse and ease.

Unfortunately, the kind of lives we now live do not withhold us on the thinking, emotional and biological levels. The absence of life enhancing, skills based, resilience techniques allow the build up of stress and toxins in our nervous ideas that eventually interrupt the free flow of energy and information. Toxic upbringing or a lack of valuable skill sets to cultivate wellness within the body/mind, leads to toxic lifestyle choices and the gradual breakdown of the vital association we have to the core of our existence.

Eating good food, practice and sleep no longer provides the prevention, safety or elevation of homeostasis within our physiology or psychology. Some of the most moving mainstream work on depression is occurring in the area of explore on the impact stress hormones play in depression. In sever depression adrenalin and cortisol levels are abnormally high. When a nervous ideas becomes overly stressed, we lose our potential to access and metabolize the energy and facts that is normally, effortlessly ready to us.

Anxiety and depression cripples our innate intelligence. When prolonged the body/mind ideas looses its potential to strategize, we lose our potential to navigate and thrive within the thinking, emotional and biological dimensions of our existence. The flight, fright and ice function of our old brain, while valuable when we are faced with life threatening situations, has come to be a rambunctious and out-of-control, organ.

In our lives we are faced with daily occurrences that trigger the stress response within our physiology:

We missed a connecting flight... And we come to be stressed.

The cashier at our beloved coffee shop is on their first shift, not been trained properly and we're already late for work... And we come to be stressed.

It's a Sunday afternoon; the one gas center town is piled up bumper to bumper with weekend warriors and person just jumped the queue... And we come to be stressed.

There is no real danger here, no actual threat to our existence. It's our schedule that has been challenged. It's our psychological idea of how things "should" be that has provoked a premature, biological reaction as masses of stress hormones are dumped into our blood stream.

In our daily lives we all contact assorted degree's of strangeness in the manifestation of our wants, needs and desires. We all contact a spectrum of reaction to the perceived threats to our safety, happiness and self-esteem. Our body/mind dutifully responds with reaction, to these very diverse kinds of stress. At some point the body/mind begins to break down, our nervous ideas can no longer tolerate the Immoderate levels of stress occurring in our lives.

We intuitively know that we have lost touch with the core of Who We Are, if only on a biological, emotional and mental level. Depression is a natural response to the unnatural condition of 21st century living. The addition levels of depression and suicide especially among our youth, is a wake up call that requires our attention. The details are vast and the options diverse, but there is hope. It lies within the wisdom of the body/mind that appears to be the source of our predilection.

As we begin to understand the body/mind, as we courageously scrutinize all levels of our existence: the biological, the emotional, and even beyond the mental dimensions, we will find new ways intuitively and functionally write back to the circumstantial evidence and challenges of our day to day living. We will engage life not from a place of survival only, but instead, tap into and thrive on the inspiration that comes from living integrated lives, lives where we have learned to connect, cultivate, harness and trust the wisdom within us.

Epilogue

In 1989 I learned how to meditate. It was my first aware option to move beyond the theories and learning's of an ever growing wellness philosophy in my life. I was now exploring first hand those ideas experientially. For the first time in life I was excited not by what was going on surface me, but what was occurring inside: I could touch, taste and smell an ever swelling movement of inner inspiration. Within about a year of daily practice, I began to contact an inner transformation, emotions and suicidal thoughts had evaporated; the desire to die was gone...

I could come up with and scrutinize volumes of venture on "the how" and "the why" of my experience, but that's not categorically what's prominent to person who spent roughly 30 years of life treading the symptoms of depression. What's prominent is that my life took on dramatic new directions that I could never maybe have imagined or anticipated. What's prominent is that even the contact of depression is subjected to the same tangible, laws of the world of form and phenomena, the physics of all life experience:

there is a beginning,

there is a middle

and

there can be a successful end to the tyranny of depression!

"Alternative" Suggestions:

Be in your body, learn to love your body:

Create and engage your own practice routine.

Get out of your head:

Spend time in nature where there is an ever-present harmony that your own nervous ideas can calibrate itself to.

Be gentle, Be easy, Be effortless:

Learning to navigate the contact of life requires skills. Many of those skills need to be learned and then practiced with vigilance in order for success to be realized.

Learn to meditate:

There are many approaches to explore, check out a few and choose one you feel drawn and most associated to, it will open doorways and re- produce the bliss of being within your contact and awareness.

Rediscover new ways of being:

There are many ways to take care of the Self. The person you were exists in the past. Who you come to be unfolds in the gift moment now. Practicing a regular habit of "self care" will combat the conditioning you may have experienced creating the space for a new you to be experienced and expressed ~ and a new day and "you" will dawn...

Recognize Who You Are:

You have thoughts, but you are not your thoughts. You have emotions but you are not your emotions. You have a body, but you are not your body. Your thoughts, your emotions and your body happen to you. They are symptoms of Who You Are.

Find out Who You Are:

The easiest way to scrutinize Who You Are is to find out what you aren't. Be vigilant. Discriminate in the middle of the thoughts and emotions that are happening to you and the awareness that is you.

Cultivate the value of acceptance:

It's ok to be sad. It's ok to be depressed. It's ok to feel like you are not in control. It's ok to feel needy, unloved, and alone. Learn to scrutinize those thoughts arise and subside, with judgment, evaluation, or assessment. Observation the thoughts, all thoughts, come and go.

Embrace your sensitive side:

Being sensitive is a gift and talent, it is not a burden. There will come a time when your sensitivity will access not the pain and suffering of your past but the bliss of the moment as it is, this is the patrimony of your past.

Seek out your own withhold team:

Surround yourself with people that withhold and sustain you, people who understand and know what it is like to suffer and people who are successfully navigating their own suffering.

Find inspiration in life:

Music? Art? Dance? Creativity? Learn to cultivate and express the creativity that exists within you.

Ask yourself some prominent questions:

Q. What are some of the tangible sources of your unhappiness in your life?

Q. What areas of your life need to be experienced and expressed more fully?

Q. Are you ignoring an inner message that needs to be responded to?

Q. Are there toxic relationships that need to be avoided or complete within your experience?

Q. Do you listen to and cultivate the wisdom of your own Soul?

It is not only determined a relaxing beverage, but also a potent healthful aid. Over the centuries its popularity grew around the world. Today, millions of people ordinarily drink it as a means to promote well being in both the mind and body.

Interestingly, green teas are derived from the same plant as black and oolong teas - Camellia sinensis. However, unlike these teas, green tea is not fermented. It is this processing technique that allows for its chemical constituents to stay, largely, intact.

Brain Cancer Statistics

Green tea (Gt) is purported to have the top attentiveness of polyphenols (catechins) and flavonoids - very noteworthy antioxidants that neutralizes the damage caused by free radicals. Along with polyphenols and flavonoids, it contains many other useful compounds. The tea's unique chemistry has been extensively studied for its role in human physiology.

Brain Cancer Statistics :The health Benefits of interesting Green Tea

Usage of Green Tea:

Green tea is used as a remedy for hundreds of ailments. From cancer to stress, it seems to act as a modern day "panacea," or cure-all. However, because its biological benefits are so extensive, only its most beloved uses will be listed here.

Antioxidant and Aging:

First and foremost, green tea is continuously heralded for its antioxidant properties. Antioxidants are compounds that scavenge free radicals. This is foremost as some free radical particles scavenge and destroy cellular tissue throughout the body. They are view to interfere with our genetic material (Dna), conduce to the aging process, and may affect the onset of certain condition problems.

Again, the polyphenols found in the tea are view to be responsible for its antioxidant action; particularly epigallocatchechin gallate (Egcg). Egcg is green tea's main polyphenol. This compound is so powerful, that it has been singled out for its role in cancer treatment and prevention. Egcg antioxidant action is almost 25 - 100 times greater than vitamins C and E.

Arthritis and Ibd:

The Egcgs in tea may also fight inflammation. This has made tea a exquisite candidate for treating conditions associated with persisting inflammation, like Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Ibd) and arthritis. Drinking tea may even deter the onset of certain forms of arthritis. The ingestion of green teas is view to decrease the severity of symptoms in persons already suffering from arthritis, as well.

Diabetes:

Another of area of interest for green tea researchers is diabetes. It has been used effectively for normalizing and maintaining wholesome blood sugar levels. Up-to-date study shows that polyphenols in contains significantly improve insulin usage by the body. Findings also propose that because of these two actions (blood sugar control and insulin enhancement), it may indubitably help preclude the amelioration of Type Ii diabetes and slow the progression of the disease once it is present.

Brain Protection:

Studies conducted in 2004 show that tea slows the effects of aging and age-associated brain regression. Aging brains suffer from many negative functional alterations. Green tea catechins are view to combat these "alterations", and aid in the regulation of wholesome cellular metabolism in the brain. More study is clearly needed, but the antioxidant inherent seems promising for reversing the effects of aging in the brain.

Cardiovascular Protection:

Adults in China and Japan have lower incidences of heart disease than other cultures. Some experts argue that their tea consumption is responsible for this statistical difference. Although there is much controversy over this theory, most researchers do agree that drinking tea lowers bad (Ldl) cholesterol, improves good (Hdl) cholesterol, and reduces the risk factors associated with conditions of the heart, like atherosclerosis.

With such a wide fluctuating range of proven condition benefits, from a goods that costs tiny and is effortlessly available almost anywhere, it is no wonder that people are discovering the advantages of supplementing their diet with green tea. This is in general because our blood sugar levels can crash after a big dose of stuff, leaving is even more tired, and hunting around for someone else snack it was a quick power fix, often washed down with our old friend caffeine. This cycle can leave us too fatigued to make a stupendous supper for ourselves, even if we feel ravenous, and this is where convenience food comes in with even more private sugars and chemical sweeteners. And so the cycle continues.

Life after sugar

Cutting down on sugar means committing to eating foods in their natural state. This means avoiding processed foods and weaning our sweet tooth on the more natural sugars, such as honey (in moderation). Balancing out the peaks and troughs of blood sugar can aid in weight loss, as we are not overheating and always hurtling from one unhealthy food fix to another, and balance our power and attention levels. This would mean you arrive at bedtime ready for a good nights sleep. The key to healthy snacking is to be prepared; a bag of roasted pumpkin seeds in your bag, a fruit bowl on your desk, or make them easier options then looking a vending motor full of power sapping sugar and salty snacks. Integrates with a day rather and find yourself suddenly starving and willing to eat Whatever you can find (it's always easier to find junk food). Tiny and often is best,. You suddenly obsessing about what to have mid-morning.

Breast Cancer Survival Rate - Stage 4 Breast Cancer

Brain Cancer Statistics :

The breast cancer survival rate for Stage 4 breast cancer is much lower than for breast cancer detected at earlier stages.

Stage 4 breast cancer, or developed breast cancer, has metastasized to other tissue together with bone tissue, lung tissue, or the liver. When breast cancer has overwhelmed the body's natural defenses and spread this far by the time the cancer is first diagnosed, the 5-year survival rate drops to 16%-20% in the United States (American Cancer Society).

Brain Cancer Statistics

Up to 5% of white women in the U.S., and up to 9% of black women have developed breast cancer spread to distant tissue at the time of first determination (Seer). This incompatibility is normally attributed to poverty and lack of health insurance.

Brain Cancer Statistics :Breast Cancer Survival Rate - Stage 4 Breast Cancer

In general, women who have developed breast cancer at the time of determination live approximately 18 months after determination (median survival rate). Those who are still alive five years after their determination of developed breast cancer can live an further 3.5 years (median survival rate) agreeing to the American Cancer Society.

Since this is the most deadly category of breast cancer, it is foremost to work intimately with all the health care providers. New treatments are being developed all the time, and second, or even third opinions may give the inpatient more data about newly discovered prosperous solutions.

Early detection is clearly the most foremost factor in breast cancer survival rates. Breast cancer detected at Stage 1 while it is still localized to the breast has a survival rate of 98%-100%, while metastasized breast cancer first detected at Stage 4 drops down to 16%-20%.

Early detection procedures must include monthly self-examinations done at the same time each month. From age 20-40, healthy women should have clinical breast exams performed by their health care providers every three years. After age 40, the breast exams should be annually and should include a mammogram or similar procedure.

North American white women have the highest rates of breast cancer in the world, but the 5-year survival rate for all stages (Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3, and Stage 4) combined is 88% for the U.S. A modern study found European countries have lower 5-year breast cancer survival rates, with England at 77.8% and Ireland at 76.2% (Lancet Oncology).

The incompatibility in these survival rates is normally attributed to life-saving early detection.

Stage 4 Colon Cancer - Don't Give Up Hope If You Reach This Stage Of Colon Cancer

Brain Cancer Statistics :

Once colon cancer reaches the level of stage 4, this is the point, statistically, when the rates of survival decrease rapidly. The mean five-year survival rate at this stage tends to be nearby 20 to 30 percent. Whilst these figures make the outlook look bad, an end to all hope should not be dismissed with stage 4 colon cancer. The importance of screening and early detection at this time is paramount.

If stage 4 colon cancer has been diagnosed, this means that the cancer has now manifested itself in other parts of the body. It is approximately certain that the cancer has invaded the lymph node theory and could perhaps be found in the liver, lungs, bones and even the brain. Even at this stage, it is still potential for citizen to live past the projected five-year period. It all depends on the location of the spread of the stage 4 colon cancer. However, overall, the analysis for stage 4 survival is not overly optimistic.

Brain Cancer Statistics

Even now, when stage 4 colon cancer has been diagnosed, there are some curative procedures and treatments that can be used to lessen symptoms. In areas where tumors can be removed, surgical operation can be performed to remove these tumors. If surgical operation isn't an option, chemotherapy and radiation therapy are often used to help. Whilst there may not be a 'cure' for stage 4 colon cancer, doctors strive to help those diagnosed to live their lives, if not a little longer, then at least a little more comfortably.

Brain Cancer Statistics :Stage 4 Colon Cancer - Don't Give Up Hope If You Reach This Stage Of Colon Cancer

Prevention is of noted importance in ensuring that citizen do not end up with stage 4 colon cancer. This in itself is not going to prove 100% productive for everyone, but to help avoid this cancer, here are a few things that citizen can do:

Reduce the risks. Not all of the risks can be removed. Some can though, and they simply involve changing your lifestyle habits. Smoking, over indulgence of alcohol and a diet that is high in fat and low in fiber are all risks that can be eliminated. Other personal risk factors that can be addressed are obesity and lack of exercise.

Undertake a screening program. The general check up course of screening starts nearby the age of 50. However, if the risks are deemed high in a person, then screening will start at an earlier stage. Both men and women are prone to colon cancer, so both can expect to have their physicians ask screening exams every few years.

The importance of screening programs and risk allowance are highlighted by the fact that symptoms of colon cancer do not generally appear until the later stages. The best form of defense can be installed by manufacture these two things a priority. By doing so, one can help to reduce the chances of stage 4 colon cancer forming.

Stage 4 colon cancer is not good and if diagnosed with this cancer, it doesn't mean that all hope is lost. With the allowable curative medicine and care, the chances of beating the five-year survival rate could be improved. Avoiding this situation in the first place by employing the blend of preventative measures and undergoing quarterly screenings is obviously the best step to take. These actions alone won't guarantee that you won't reach stage 4 colon cancer, but they will help in decreasing the chances for advancement of the colon cancer.

Survival Rates of Patients with Leukemia

Brain Cancer Statistics :

Although healing science has evolved significantly in the last decades, the medicine of leukemia is still a major issue in present. Modern medicine doesn't hold the cure for leukemia and healing treatments available these days furnish differentiated results. Survival rates depend on the promptitude of diagnosis, the type of medicine and the patients' responsiveness to specific cancer therapies and treatments. Although leukemia can't all the time be fully overcome, the progression of the disease can be slowed down and its malignant effects can be contained with the help of existent cancer treatments. Thus, the life expectancy of patients with leukemia has risen considerably in the last three decades. By contrast, the mortality rate registered among patients with leukemia has known a pronounced decrease in the last decade.

The medicine of leukemia is focused towards achieving a complete remission with minimal side-effects. complete remission refers to absence of leukemia traces at cellular level. Patients who gift no evidence of malignant cellular action after completing the medicine of leukemia are determined to be fully cured. By contrast, relapse indicates a recurrence of leukemia definite symptoms and physiological signs.

Brain Cancer Statistics

In the case of patients with acute leukemia, a remission that lasts for more than five years after the medicine suggests a complete recovery. This five-year period is determined to be significant for leukemia sufferers, as it can make the difference between relapse and complete recovery.

Brain Cancer Statistics :Survival Rates of Patients with Leukemia

In the last few decades, the five-year survival period of patients with leukemia has tripled. While in the 60's the five-year survival rate was nearby 15 percent, nowadays it revolves nearby 50 percent. This five-year survival period is strongly influenced by patients' age and the type of leukemia. Statistics indicate that the five-year survival rate for patients with acute lymphocytic leukemia (All) is nearby 60 percent, while the five-year survival rate for patients with persisting lymphocytic leukemia (Cll) is higher, reaching the value of 70 percent. By contrast, the diagnosis of patients with myelogenous leukemia is less favorable. The same five-year survival rate for patients diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia (Aml) is nearby 14 percent, while an estimated 32 percent of patients with persisting myelogenous leukemia (Cml) exceed this five-year survival period.

The five-year survival rate for children diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia revolves nearby the value of 80 percent, while the unabridged survival rate of children with acute lymphocytic leukemia is less than 45 percent. This type of leukemia is the most coarse form of cancer diagnosed in children. Due to the fact that it predominantly affects young patients with ages between 3 and 15, the disease is referred to as childhood leukemia.

In the United States, the mortality rate for children with leukemia has decreased with 60 percent in the last three decades. In spite of this fact, leukemia is still the important cause of death among young patients with ages under 15.

Brain Tumors in Dogs and Cats

Brain Cancer Statistics :

Though relatively uncommon, a brain tumor has always made a grim determination for unfortunate animal that is diagnosed with one. Traditionally they were often assumed but seldom confirmed, but since Mri and Ct scanning has come to be more mainstream they can be diagnosed correctly. Here we discuss the separate types of brain tumor that sway dogs and cats, the clinical investigations that can be performed, the treatments available and the likely outcomes.

Brain tumors seem to be more base in dogs than cats, and definite breeds are over represented such as Boxers, Golden Retrievers, Dobermans, Scottish Terriers and Old English Sheepdogs.

Brain Cancer Statistics

Primary vs Secondary

Brain Cancer Statistics :Brain Tumors in Dogs and Cats

Brain tumors can be original or secondary (metastasis from other sites). original brain tumors are normally solitary, the most base ones in the dog being gliomas and meningiomas. In cats, the most base type are meningiomas and these can occur at multiple locations.

Secondary tumors in dogs contain prolongation of a nasal tumor, metastases from breast, lung or prostate cancer, hemangiosarcoma or prolongation of a pituitary gland tumor. Nerve sheath tumors and skull tumors have also been reported. Secondary tumors in cats contain pituitary gland tumors, metastatic carcinomas, local prolongation of nasal tumors, skull tumors and middle ear cavity tumors.

What causes a brain tumor?

The cause of brain tumors is not known. Diet, environment, chemical, genetic, viral, immunologic and trauma have all been considered. In cats with meningiomas, because they often occur in very young animals, a genetic element is suspected.

Benign vs Malignant

The terms benign and malignant must be used with care when referring to brain tumors. normally these terms apply to varied characteristics on a cellular level, but on a biological level, even benign brain tumors can kill the animal due to the secondary effects like increased intracranial pressure or cerebral edema. In short, any brain tumor can kill.

What are the symptoms?

There can be huge variety here. Many animals will gift with vague signs, such as one or some of the following:

1. Loss of trained habits

2. Decreased levels of activity

3. Decreased frequency of purring in cats

4. Disorientation

5. Obscuring More definite symptoms are dependent upon where exactly the tumor is located within the brain, the size of the tumor and how quickly it is growing. As a tumor enlarges, symptoms tend to come to be more severe. These can include:

6. Seizures (often indicate a tumor in the cerebral cortex)

7. Facial dullness (may indicate a brainstem tumor)

8. Tremors (may indicate a tumor in the cerebellum)

9. Wobbliness (may indicate a tumor in the cerebellum)

10. Full or partial blindness (may indicate tumor in hypothalamus or optic nerve)

11. Loss of smell (may indicate tumor of olfactory system)

The corporal presence of the tumor can cause knock on effects due to inflammation and edema of the surrounding area. This can cause symptoms such as:

12. Changes in behaviour or temperament (irritability, lethargy)

13. Compulsive walking

14. Circling

15. Pressing head against a wall or hard surface

Animals can sometimes carry brain tumors for some years before presenting to a veterinary clinic, if the tumor is slow growing. In these cases the symptoms manufacture gradually, and the owner tends to get used to them so that by the time the animal is examined, the tumor has reached a requisite size.

How is a brain tumor diagnosed?

History and Clinical Examination

The first step for a veterinarian is to take a thorough history of all of the clinical signs, and when they developed. This is followed by a full general clinical examination and a full neurological examination.

Bloods

After that, blood should be taken for habit haematology and biochemistry profiles. This is to look for any disease surface the brain. Results will be general for brain tumors, with the potential exception of some pituitary gland tumors.

Radiography

Plain skull radiographs (xrays) under general anesthetic have small value in detecting a brain tumor, but they can be beneficial if there is a tumor in the nasal cavities or the middle ear which could extend into the skull. On rare occasions, they can recognize bony changes in the skull which can accompany a brain tumor, or mineralization within the tumor itself. Radiographs and ultrasound of the chest and abdomen are beneficial to look for a tumor elsewhere in the body, in cases where the brain tumor is a secondary metastasis.

Mri and Ct Scans

Confirmation of a brain tumor can is normally only achieved using the developed imaging techniques, Ct scans or Mri. Both of these have pros and cons when compared to one another. Ct is better for bony changes, while Mri is better for soft tissue definition, for the detection of many of the knock on effects of brain tumors such as edema, cysts and bleeding. Mri is the favorite choice for diagnosing original brain tumors.

Biopsy

This is the only way to definitively diagnose a brain tumor. The developed imaging techniques above offer much information, but they can occasionally confuse a tumor with a non cancerous mass or a cyst, and they also do not tell us the exact type of tumor present, and therefore the thorough medicine and prognosis. The best type of biopsy is the Ct guided stereotactic brain biopsy system, which is rapid, exact and quite safe. Since exploratory surgical operation is high risk, it is not normally attempted unless there is a inexpensive chance of removing the whole tumor with minimal collateral damage. Many brain tumors in cats and dogs are not categorized on a cellular level until post mortem.

Cerebrospinal Fluid (Csf) Analysis

Csf determination is beneficial for ruling out inflammatory causes of the symptoms, but tumor cells are rarely identified here. Increased levels of white blood cells and increased protein levels may be gift in the Csf with many brain tumors, though this is not diagnostic. This test can be high risk when intracranial pressure is increased, as brain herniation can occur.

Treatment

Treatment is aimed at being either healing or palliative. healing medicine eradicates the tumor or reduces its size, whilst palliative therapy reduces the surrounding cerebral edema and slows down the increase of the tumor. Palliative therapy also involves administering antiepileptic drugs, if seizures are occurring as a ensue of the tumor.

Surgery

Whether this is an choice depends on the general condition of the animal, and the exact location, size, extent, invasiveness and nature of the tumor. Tumors such as meningiomas in cats can be removed successfully by surgery. However, surgical operation to remove tumors in definite locations such as the brainstem can be very dangerous, possibly resulting in death. Even partial removal can benefit the animal though, particularly if the tumor is slow growing.

Radiotherapy

This is probably the most widely used form of medicine for brain tumors. Radiation therapy can be used alone or in blend with other treatments. It is also beneficial in the medicine of secondary brain tumors. The aim is to destroy the tumor without harming the general tissue too much.

Chemotherapy

The main qoute with chemotherapy for brain tumors is that many drugs do not cross the blood brain barrier. In addition, the tumor may only be sensitive to high doses, doses which are toxic to general brain tissue and therefore unsuitable for use. However, some drugs have been used for this purpose that can cross the blood brain fence with reported success, including cytosine arabinoside, lomustine and carmustine.

Probable Outcome

Studies of animals that receive palliative medicine (corticosteroids) for brain tumors show a survival range post determination of 64 to 307 days. This demonstrates the inability to accurately predict life expectancy in these cases. What is definite is that the survival times significantly increase with surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Radiation therapy seems to offer the best results, alone or in blend with other treatments. Generally, the more severe the symptoms, the shorter the life expectancy.
